A Filipino Triathlete in 2012 London Olympics

A Filipino triathlete in 2012 London Olympics.

This may be a tall order for Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) founded two decades ago and had its first nationals in 1992, but its president Tom Carrasco said, “We will leave no stone unturned to have this vision turn to fruition.''

Carrasco, also Asian Triathlon Confederation senior vice president and former Asian representative to the International Triathlon Union, bared the transfer of the famed team TBB (The Bike Boutique) training camp to Subic Bay Freeport will jumpstart their quest.

As usual, the support and assistance from TRAP's strategic partners - Philippine Sports Commission and Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority - will be pivotal.

Team TBB's top foreign coaches will train the national team

alongside world-class triathletes under its wings, most notably 2007 Ironman ladies champion Chrissie Wellington and Nicola Spirig, distaff side winner in the 2007 World Cup in Eilat, Israel.

Under its patent formula, team TBB has produced a 2008 Beijing Olympics qualifier, Reinaldo Colucci who was an underprivileged kid from Brazil.

Our national team had a taste of team TBB's tried and tested tough regimen for almost two months prior to the recent Southeast Asian Games in Phang Nga, Thailand where it is based.

The SEAG results were encouraging.

Triathletes Sandra Araullo and Mimi Lucas went inside the national record in bagging the silver and bronze medals.

George Vilog who has been in and out of the RP squad and Arland Macasieb who lowered the national standard in New York early this year also emerged as silver and bronze medalists.

Two-time Asian Duathlon Championship titlist Ryan Mendoza romped with the duathlon gold medal while August Benedicto and Annaliza Dysangco settled for the bronzes.

With its haul of seven out of twelve medals, the RP team landed on top of the heap as the four gold medals at stake went to four different countries.

Next year's first Asian Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia and the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games will serve as ‘'sighters'' whether TRAP's quest is on track.
