Port dickson international triathlon


Joash Serrano, the country's top junior triathlete, clinched his first international title when he dominated the Port Dickson International Triathlon's sprint race even as Kim Mangrobang bagged a bronze medal in the distaff side in Malaysia Sunday.

Serrano clocked a remarkable 49 minutes and 11 seconds in the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-km event, one minute and one second ahead of runnerup Alan Chan of Hong Kong.

Another one minute and four seconds adrift at third place in the elite junior category is Arthur Chung, also of Hong Kong.

Mangrobang checked in at 53:49. Winner Vincci Hui and silver medalist

Joyce Cheung, both of Hong Kong, timed 52:23 and 52:50 respectively.

The other members of the compact Team Philippines sponsored by Philippine Sports Commission and with adidas as official outfitter performed satisfactorily.

Andrew Gatmaitan claimed 6th spot with a time of 53:16 while her sister Anna (1:09:26) was fourth.

Tom Carrasco, president of Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP), said, “The fine performances of Joash and Kim have demonstrated the well-roundedness of our programs.”

TRAP hosted the 2007 International Triathlon Union-BG Asian Junior Training Camp at Subic Bay Freeport July 6-15. In the graduation race, both Serrano and Mangrobang emerged as bronze medalists with the Hong Kong triathletes finishing 1-2 in both boys and girls divisions.

From July 9 to 15, the ITU-BG Asian Coaching Course was also held in Subic Bay Freeport which was also the venue of the ITU-BG International Technical Officials Certification Course for Asians last May 4-6 with the Subic International Triathlon which inaugurated kiddies triathlon (super kids) as the practicum vehicle.
