Barcarse, Dysangco show class in Tarlac elims

TARLAC CITY - Abraham Barcarse returned to the scene of his triumph last year by easily ruling the 4th leg of the National Milo marathon elimination race yesterday.

Barcarse, 22, set the pace right after Mayor Aro Mendoza fired the starting gun and hit the tape in 1:08:07, surpassing his winning time of 1:10 last year.

The farmer's son from Aparri, Cagayan pocketed the top prize of P10,000 and advanced to the grand finals, set in November in Manila, alon gwith runner-up Jujet de Asis (1:10:53) and third placer Bowen Montecillo (1:12:56).

Analiza Dysangco shared honors with Barcarse by topping the distaff side in 1:32:45.

Anna Liza Vargas came in second in 1:42:08 and Ederlita Sanchez took third in 1:45:46.

Barcarse, and Education senior at Far Eastern University, failed to compete in last year's grand finals due to a knee injury.

"Paghahandaan ko ito dahil mabigat ang labanan dito, lahat ng magagaling ay kasali (I will prepare hard for the finals because all the country's best are joining)," said Barcarse.

De Asis, a protege of 1992 Milo Marathon champion Rey Antoque, and Montecillo challenged Barcarse in the early going but faded as the race wore on.

The top three finishers in the races received their prizes from Milo Events executive Pat Goc-Ong.

About 10,000 runners vied for honors in the event organized by Tarlac City sports chief Arnold Rodriguez and supervised by Milo national race director Rudy Biscocho.
