TRAP Sends Coaches to ITU/BG Coaching Course

National coaches Abet Alon-Alon, Loi Rafols, and Rick Reyes attended the first ever BG/ITU Levl 1 Coach Certification Course from September 16- 24, 2006 in Changping, Beijing, China. Along with twelve other coaches from China, Mongolia, Korea, Singapore, and Macau. our coaches went through an intense, 3-session a day course that included lectures, practical sessions with local Chinese triathletes, presentations, and group projects. The final activity was an observation and evaluation of the BG/ITU Beijing World Cup held on the 24 th .

Our coaches also got to observe up close how the different delegations/teams prepare for a World Cup and of course, eventually for the Olympics. The Beijing World Cup venue will also be the same one for the 2008 Beijing Olympics triathlon and it was obvious that preparations were already underway.

The course was very ably conducted by Libby Burrell, ITU Director of Sport Development, along with Alan Ley (Coach Education Manager, USAT), Craig Redman (Sport Development Coordinator, Triathlon Australia) and Brendon Downey (High Performance Coach, New Zealand. Ms. Burrell stressed that ITU has made coach education a priority and will embark on a campaign to establish coach education programs in federations around the world.

The Coach Education courses are part of the overall Sport Development program made possible by the recent partnership between BG Group and the ITU.

The next BG/ITU Sport Development program is a regional development camp scheduled to be held in Guatemala in early November.
